Turf: Safer Than Grass?

With football season just around the corner, AISD high schools have new turf to practice on.

At the four high schools in Amarillo, it's out with the old and in with the new... Grass fields are a thing of the past. This is the first football season Amarillo High Schools will be using this fake grass, both in practice and at games at Dick Bivens.

One local doctor says, in general, turf is safer than grass, but there is one concern parents and players should know about. When it's so hot out here in late summer, the rubber beneath the turf can heat up easily and become sticky, causing a loss is traction.

"This is just a word of caution," says Dr. Bill Barnhill. He says its best for games played this time of year on the turf to be played later at night, so the rubber doesn't get sticky and injuries can be avoided.
