Ouch! Severe Burns Caused By Playground Equipment

Getting burned on playground equipment is more of a danger for your child than most people realize.

Local doctor John Young says any object found at the playground that reaches 120 degrees or hotter has the potential to burn someone, so today we put the equipment to the test.

We asked the Amarillo Fire Department to bring their thermal imaging camera to get an idea what area kids were playing on.

"The surface temperature is 143 degrees...the ground you walk on is 160..."

And that temperature is more than hot enough to severely burn a child.

Dr. Young says it is possible to get second and third degree burns that require hospitalization.

And after realizing the risks associated with this hot equipment local parents we spoke with at the park say now they are going to check the surface temperature at the playground before they allow their children to play.
