Vaccines Needed Before School

While you're thinking about back-to-school supplies for the upcoming school year, doctors want you to remember to have your children vaccinated before they walk into the classroom.

The Amarillo Health Department says the city's vaccination rate is pretty low, which is one reason why it has a clinic every Friday during the month of August offering low-cost vaccinations.

The city's assistant director of public health says parents should take advantage of the innovations in vaccinations over the years, especially those for diseases like mumps, measles and diphtheria.

Vaccinations are required for more than ten diseases. Vaccines for meningitis and HPV are elective, but still offered for the low cost at the city's clinic.

The immunization coordinator for the health department says there is one disease in particular that you may not realize sends many children to the hospital every year...

But she says whooping cough could be prevented with a simple vaccine.

The city will hold immunization clinics throughout the month of August at these locations and times:

8/8: Sanborn Elem., 2-6

8/12: Glenwood Elem., 2-6:30

8/19: Hamlet Elem., 2-6:30

8/15, 22 & 29: Wyatt Clinic, 8-11a.m., 1-4 p.m.
