FEMA Assess Flood Damage in Ruidoso

Federal Emergency Management Agency teams are touring Ruidoso today.

They're checking how much damage was done by a flash flood that inundated parts of the resort community and surrounding areas Sunday from the remnants of Hurricane Dolly.

FEMA spokesman Winston Barton says the teams are assessing damage to homes and businesses to see who might qualify for individual assistance.

Tomorrow, teams will look at damage to public roads and bridges to see if those qualify for federal aid.

Barton says the idea is to have all the assessments done and turned in to the agency's Region 6 office in Denton, Texas, by Monday so officials can determine whether the area qualifies for federal help.

He says, however, FEMA cannot release funds unless President Bush issues a disaster declaration.
