Free Summer Lunch Program Flourishes

More families are relying on food programs to get their children the nutrients they need.   During the summer months low income children are left on their own, providing a proper meal for themselves. Cash strapped families are turning to food programs for help.

The Amarillo Parks and Recreation. offers free meals to all children no matter what income level.  More than 1500 children receive meals from the summer lunch program. Program Coordinator, Wendy Baca, says they have seen the number of children asking for lunches has doubled since last summer. Now, providing more meals to children then ever expected.

"Absolutely, especially since it's a free summer lunch. Definitely have some growth.  As the summer progresses. Definitely seeing double the numbers at most parks," Baca said.

An average of 20 to 60 children are fed daily at each of the 17 park sites through out Amarillo.   The program ends once school gets ready to start. State grant money funds the lunch program.  The children are guaranteed a nutritious meal and even have some time to play.

The children from the group enjoy the activities and their lunch. One child Andrew Hawley says he enjoys his free lunch. "I really love it! it's actually good and nutritious and gives you all your vitamins".

None of the food is wasted if there is any leftover... Kids get a second helping.
