Polygamist Senate Hearing

Former members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have testified that the polygamous church violates the rights of women and children.

Carolyn Jessop told the Senate Judiciary Committee that she was a plural wife who fled the FLDS before her 14-year-old daughter could be forced into an arranged marriage. She said her son had been pressed into unpaid full-time labor at the age of 12.

Former member Daniel Fischer said church members believe their salvation depends on totally obeying FLDS leader Warren Jeffs, who's now in prison after being convicted of being an accomplice to rape.

The Senate panel was told that federal help is needed because the church crosses state lines to evade prosecution.
