Portales Sees Spike In Staph Infections

An area hospital is seeing a spike in the number of deadly staph infections.

Roosevelt General Hospital officials are worried about the rise of MRSA cases in their facility.

The Patient Care Director says the number of cases of the so-called superbug has gone up from 43 percent from 2004 to 2005 to 58 percent from 2006-2007.

Nationwide, 94,000 MRSA infections are reported every year.

Eighty-six percent of those are associated with healthcare.

However, the hospital officials say their rates are lower than the national average.

They say they are trying to get some set of standards together to cut down on the number of cases.
