SANTA FE (AP) - A September 8th public hearing is scheduled in Santa Fe on proposed rules for the state's new medical marijuana program. New Mexicans will be allowed to offer comments on regulations that would set up rules for patient ID cards and a regulated system for licensing, distributing and manufacturing medical marijuana.

DULCE, N.M. (AP) - A 3-year-old boy who lived on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation has died of injuries he suffered after allegedly being beating by his father. A criminal complaint says the boy suffered head injuries, and his body was covered with bruises and whip marks. The father was arrested at his home Sunday in Dulce.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A new poll shows Barack Obama has opened a big lead over John McCain among Hispanic voters. The survey for the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center shows that 66% of Hispanic registered voters support Obama, compared to 23% for McCain. While Hispanics make up only about 9% of eligible voters, they could play an important role in New Mexico and three other potential battleground states: Florida, Colorado, and Nevada.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Recent discoveries of animals with tuberculosis has led the Nebraska Department of Agriculture to issue importation embargoes for beef cattle and bison entering the state from New Mexico and California. The embargo takes effect immediately.
