Richardson proposes help for New Mexicans

SANTA FE (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson will ask lawmakers to approve a wide-ranging assistance package during a special session that could be held as soon as next month.

The proposed package includes income tax rebates, tax-free shopping for the winter holidays, increased tax credits for working families, and help with child care and energy costs.

The proposals would be paid for largely out of a $400 million budget surplus New Mexico will have this year.

The other big item on the special session agenda will be health care reform.

The governor had said the session would be in September but on Thursday he said he may call it in early August.
