Families of disabled children in the panhandle are driving hours and hours. Just to give their child a fun summer experience.

It's an experience that some may take for granted. The pleasure of fishing, building friendships and camping and disabled Panhandle children are missing out until now.

Sue Simms, mother of a disabled child says panhandle parents are challenged finding extra-curricular activities. "Ask any parent, they want social interaction... Camp is an experience," Simms explains. Simms says most families who are on limited budgets have to drive at least 5- 7 hours.

That's what the Talon Point resort is going is trying to alleviate for families in our region. "There's just no where for them to go. We're building this for those kids in this area have some where to go for camp," Volunteer Steve Rehkopf said.

Volunteers are working on the last minute touches, such as the lake, train, and grounds. Once completed Talon Point will be the only place in the Panhandle for disabled and disadvantaged children to go for an experience of a life time.

Simms says, "It's nice to give them a different feeling... Horseback riding, a train and fishing get to go camping".

That vision is being brought together by a charitable group of people such as Steve Rehkopf, Valero and the Panhandle Children's Foundation.

Rehkopf says, "Our ultimate goal was to build a place for them. We were fortunate enough to inherit this place." A memory of camp, that the foundation and volunteers hope they can give all kids.

The Talon Point resort talon is open to the public. Your stay at the ranch will help contribute to the program for the children, which is expected to be completed by next summer.
