Drought Relief Approved

Relief is coming.

Residents in Cimarron and Texas counties have been approved for disaster relief benefits through the Department of Agriculture.

Officials say a severe drought has prompted the need for extra funding.

Seven more counties in the Oklahoma panhandle have been recommended for disaster relief, but there is no word on whether they will get it.

Currently the situation in the panhandle is being labeled at the most severe level, exceptional.

The disaster declaration makes farm operators eligible for low-interest loans through the farm service agency's emergency loan program and payments from other federal programs.

It also provides federal tax considerations to ranchers who sell livestock early because of drought conditions.
