City Commission Will Decide Whether or Not To Close Jail

The Amarillo City Commission is hitting the road today and the meeting is in the Amarillo High School's auditorium.

One item that will be voted on this evening, is the decision to shut down the Amarillo City Jail and use the Randall County facility.

This morning Randall County Commissioners approved the inter local agreement with the city of Amarillo to provide jail services to the Amarillo Police Department.

The tentative agreement says the county sheriff's office will guarantee up to 78 beds after it completes construction on an addition to the existing jail.

In turn the city will pay about 55 dollars a day for each city inmate housed at the Randall County facility.

The consolidation of jails is expected to be cost saving for both the city and Randall County.

We'll have more on this agreement this evening.
