Texas Medical Assn. drops endorsement of GOP Cornyn

AUSTIN (AP) _ The Texas Medical Association today dropped its endorsement of Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn because of his vote on Medicare spending.

Cornyn late Thursday voted against a U.S. House-passed bill that would have canceled a scheduled cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients.

TMA president Doctor Josie Williams says Cornyn chose to protect the profits of insurance companies -- instead of protecting the health of patients.

Cornyn spokesman Kevin McLaughlin called the senator's action a "procedural vote'' and says the association is fully aware that the legislation will be corrected shortly.

McLaughlin says Cornyn will honor his commitment to Texas doctors to find a long-term solution to the problem. Cornyn is being challenged by Democratic State Representative Rick Noriega.

TMA hasn't announced whether it will endorse Noriega.
