NM cracks down on alcohol at construction sites

SANTA FE (AP) _ Gov. Bill Richardson's adminstration plans to require contractors on state construction projects to randomly test their employees for drug and alcohol use.

The governor announced the proposal on Wednesday, saying it was in response to the death last month of a worker at a bridge construction site along Interstate 40 in Gallup. The worker and several other construction crew members allegedly had been drinking before the accident, according to police.

Richardson directed state agencies to implement several new requirements in future construction contracts to help stop drinking and drug use at work sites.

Agencies are to propose rules and regulations to implement the contract provisions.
