City Approval Equals Final Step For A Downtown Hotel

A 108 room hotel is coming to Downtown Amarillo.

Today City Commissioners gave the final Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone approval for the Courtyard by Marriott to begin construction.

The TIRZ project was vital to getting the hotel downtown.

The incentive project will reimburse the hotel up to $1.6 million of property tax over the next 20 years.

Officials with Center City say they're excited about bringing more people to downtown.

"The Certificate of Occupancy is supposed to be issued by december of 2009. Construction should start by the end of this year and it will be exciting to see that part of Amarillo come back to life," said Beth Duke of Center City.

The hotel will be built within the Fisk Building on the corner of 8th and Polk.
