Potter County swore in a new sheriff and within minutes he appointed a new chief deputy, the second in command at the agency.

His choice is former sheriff candidate and department employee Clay Duke.

He's already lost his chance to become the next Potter County sheriff, but today Clay Duke took over a very powerful position within the sheriff's office.

Clay Duke has worked in Amarillo law enforcement for nearly four decades.

Until today he had never met his new boss, Interim Sheriff Ron Boyter.

"In fact I just met him officially for the first time. I told him if you come in please come up and shake my hand so I know who you are. I knew him from tv and I knew who he was and I know his qualifications," Boyter said.

Commissioners say Boyter was brought in with his 30 years of experience at the state level, to give the department a fresh start.

Boyter appointed Duke because of his extensive knowledge of the department in Potter County.

They plan to use both their expertise to change morale in the sheriff office.

"Tough. We'll be tough and their's a lot of things that need to be done in many areas and we're gonna do it. I have no doubt about that," said Boyter

"Well what I want to do is help Sheriff Boyter in his mission and his goals and I know his goals are to restore public trust in the Potter County Sheriff Department," said Duke.

At the office earlier today one secretary told me she was having a great day at work.

Something she never thought she'd say, showing moral has already changed at the sherrif's office.
