AQHA Holds Fundraiser For Pokey The Clown

A beloved Amarillo legend receives help from his Panhandle neighbors.

A benefit Junior Ranch Rodeo for Doug Smith, known for years to those in Amarillo as Pokey the Clown, was held Saturday at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum Arena.

Pokey recently underwent emergency bypass surgery shortly after his wife had back surgery. The rodeo is to help with their piling hospital bills.

His son, Jeff Smith, also a clown who goes by "Tumbleweed" says, "we want to raise money because he has supported this community for many years."

The rodeo started at 10 in the morning and was geared toward children.  Events included a Pony Express Race, Steer Doctoring and Calf Branding.

Medals and champion tee shirts as well as a chance to compete in the National WRCA Rodeo in November will be awarded to winning teams.

Yesterday Amarillo Mayor Debra McCartt declared Saturday "Pokey The Clown Day."
