Possible Tornado Does Damage in Childress

Police tell NewsChannel10 no major injuries were reported due to the storm. Crews are headed to the scene and we will have the latest on the storm this morning on The Early show.

The Associated Press is reporting that a storm with winds of up to 80 mph knocked out power and telephone service, downed trees and overturned a tractor-trailer rig in Childress.

Authorities worked early Monday to clear debris from roadways and to check on residents.

The National Weather Service said it had reports of a tractor-trailer rig blown over on the western edge of the town as well as damage to a gas station canopy.

There were also reports of quarter-sized hail piled 6 inches deep in downtown Childress.

The Texas Department of Public Safety in Amarillo said some phone service in the region was knocked out.

Wind gusts of up to 80 mph were reported, according to the Weather Service.

The Weather Service in Lubbock said it wouldn't know if the damage was from a tornado or straight-line winds until a storm survey can be completed.
