Next Step for Shumate

In protective custody. Former Potter County Sheriff Mike Shumate is awaiting the next step after being found guilty of engaging in criminal activity of bribery.

We do know the Sheriff is in the Potter County Jail right now. Some questions have been raised about his security.. We have been told the former sheriff is in protective custody.

Just before midnight Thursday.. Shumate was found guilty of engaging in organized criminal activity involving bribery.

He was found not guilty of two counts of taking illegal campaign contributions.

Shumate is now expected to be sentenced for the crime Tuesday.

There are several options the court has... They can order Shumate to spend 5 to 99 years in prison, give him a life sentence, or let him off with probation.

No matter what, he has been stripped of his title as Sheriff.
