How To Save Money On Your Sprinkler System

A broken sprinkler head can waste as much as five gallons of water a minute. So, it can really add up if you're not careful.

We've been focusing mostly on businesses in our weekly Water Wasters series, but there are things homeowners can do to stop wasting water as well. In most cases, all it takes is five minutes and it could save you thousands on your water bill.

"It's not rocket science. It's very simple." John Doane is talking about watering your yard efficiently, and he's right. One of the easiest things you can do to save yourself some money is to not water as often. Doane, who owns Lawnalizer Lawn Care, says "It's better to water fewer times a week for longer each time. You should water for a minimum of twenty minutes, but no more than 35 minutes per section."

It's a good idea to check once a week for broken sprinkler heads.  If yours is broken, no worries...fixing it won't hurt your checkbook. It's very easy to fix and it only costs around $5.00 for a new sprinkler head.

Even if you follow all the rules and water wisely, there's one thing you just can't control...the wind. As for what to do with all the money you'll be saving on your water bill.... Doane's got a pretty good suggestion. "You can put that towards your gas tank." With gas prices so high these days...he just might be on to something.
