Inmate Escapes From Courtroom

Joshua Duane Barnes Joshua Duane Barnes

Armed and dangerous inmate is loose on our streets. An inmate escaped from the Potter County Courts building this morning. As of 1p.m. Friday, police are still searching for a man who ran out of the courthouse in downtown Amarillo.

The suspect is 20-year old Joshua Duane Barnes... a white male, 5'8 and 175 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. Deputies say when he escaped, Barnes was wearing a jail stripped suit and may no longer be wearing his shirt.

He was in the custody of Potter County officials when he just walked out of the courtroom. The Potter County Sheriff's department says the suspect was with 3 other inmates at the time, who did not escape with him. Barnes was being sentenced to up to 5-20 year terms for four counts of burglary and tampering with evidence that occurred in Randall county.

Sheriff Deputies are warning residents that Barnes is dangerous. He has been charged with aggravated assault.  Police are asking for residents to call them if you see him, but do not try to approach him yourself.

You can call the Potter County Sheriffs Office at 379-2900.

We will continue to keep you up to date as we get more information in on this situation. Tonight at 10 p.m. Also, interviews with his family on the escape.
