An east Amarillo neighborhood is trying to recuperate after a 3-alarm fire evacuates the area.

A number of families are homeless tonight after flames destroyed homes in the area of East 3rd and Airport Boulevard. It took fire crews 2 hours to contain the blaze. Captain Bob Johnson with the Amarillo Fire Department says the fire started around 6:30 Wednesday evening.

The blaze destroyed 4 homes, a shed and a building. Flames could be seen from miles which forced neighbors to evacuate the area.

Resident Jackie Knight came home to the chaotic scene of flames and not knowing if her family was safe. "I was in a shear panic I thought did she make it out... Is the house burning down? Did my sister go with her?. I was just all upset" Knight describing her worries.

Fire crews managed to put the fire out around 8:30 this evening. Captain Bob Johnson says no one was injured in the fire. Fire crews are investigating the exact origin and cause of the fire.
