Wreckage of plane to be removed from lake

Posted: Updated:

FRITCH, Texas (AP)  Workers plan to remove the wreckage of a small plane found in a receding portion of Lake Meredith after it had been missing for more than two decades.

Park staff will begin the removal early Wednesday to avoid high winds and waves on the lake.

A National Park Service spokeswoman says the plane is on a sandbar of mesquite branches in about 2 to 4 feet of water at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.

The Beech 77 Skipper aircraft disappeared on Jan. 27, 1984, after leaving from Amarillo on a two-hour flight. Officials believe the plane went down in Lake Meredith, although there were no witnesses to the accident.

The park service says so far, no human remains have been found. Steven Lampe was the pilot of the small, two-seat plane. Larry Lucas was his passenger.
