Shumate Trial: Day One

The trial of Potter County's Sheriff Mike Shumate has begun. Jury Selection began early Monday morning at the Potter County Court House.

It took close to five hours of questioning and answering by prosecution and defense attorney's. Even potential juror candidates were able to ask questions as well.  One potential juror said, "He's (Shumate) here for a reason". Another said, "Let him walk out the door now".

The end result 12 female jurors and the alternate is also a female, which visiting District Judge Quay Parker said was a rare occurrence for his career as a judge.

The thirteen jurors were selected out of more than 130 potential candidates. They will hear the case against sheriff Shumate.  He is charged with one count of bribery and two counts of improper campaign contribution both felony charges. He could face 5 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

The trial is being prosecuted by the Texas Attorney General's Office after a two year investigation, which defense attorney's say was prompted by Summate's ex-wife.

The jury is expected to be back in court Tuesday morning for opening statements from Prosecution and Defense attorneys.
