Amarillo Tourism Down...Look For Summer Savings

Some businesses and local attractions are seeing a decline in visitors as tourism in Amarillo remains flat. Newschannel 10's Stephanae Benson reports the Amarillo Convention and Visitor's Council says they have new ways for you to save.
Phyllis Payne the General Manager at the Ambassador hotel has seen a drop in visitors this year compared to last.

"About 5 to 7 percent in occupancy and in the average rate. We're seeing definitely a softening in tourism in our area."
The Amarillo Convention and Visitor's Council says the weakening economy and energy prices are to blame for the down turn in visiting Amarillo's local attractions.

"It's spreading out and affecting travel and tourism and other parts of the economy. So I think people are far more conservative about making their travel plans. Hopefully they will travel and decide yes we can do it and they'll go." said Communications Director, Eric Miller.

Miller says the visitor council just finished visiting San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin campaigning to bring more people to visit Amarillo, and promoting special deals on ways you can save.

"I think we added up the total value about a $100-$150 worth of coupons to about 15 attractions either for you living in town or for your friends and family coming from out of town."
Payne says the hotels in the area are doing the same.

"A big, big thing for all hoteliers is e-commerce. The advent of the internet and people ability to search for new deals and giving them special deals, minimum night stay deals as well as just lower rates."

One local attraction that is thriving is th Palo Duro Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Texas. They say they have a steady flow of visitors and the park is full. If you are planning a vacation one way to save is to plan ahead.

"Planning ahead, being flexible for when you can go. Steering away from holidays when possible. Know what you want to do and package it all together, your airfare, your hotel accommodations and your transportation and car rental and possibly your admissions into some of the sights your going to see." said Lea Ann Fulton at the Amarillo AAA.
