HIV Cases Increase Slightly

HIV cases are slightly increasing in Amarillo.

Around 500 people in the Panhandle are already living with the virus. The Panhandle AIDS Support Organization that number could actually be higher.

Michael Timcisko says "a larger number of people out there have it, they just don't know it."

Timcisko says not enough people are getting tested these days. He says there is one major reason for that.  He says "the conversation about AIDS prevention has gone away because people are not dying as much from it."

Advances in medicine have made the disease more treatable, and in turn letting people live longer.

But Timciscko says it is still fatal for many, one reason he says the discussion about the disease should be revisited.
