Seliger Responds After Town Hall Meeting

Legislation may be on the way to conserve water in the Ogallala Aquifer.

That's what Texas State Senator Kel Seliger says after a town hall meeting on friday about the Roberts County Fresh Water Supply District.

The water district would allegedly pump more water out of the ogallala aquifer than all other municipal water districts in the panhandle, combined.

Senator Kel Seliger of Amarillo says over 80 million gallons per year would potentially be shipped off to the Dallas metroplex.

This is something Amarillo Senator Seliger takes very seriously because the aquifer, unlike other water sources in Texas, doesn't replenish itself.

And he's ready to introduce legislation to conserve the aquifer.

"Without question there's legislaion we can and will consider to ease a lot of the worries and still allow for things people are in favor of like wind energy and see to it goes to places where it will be used," said Senator Seliger.

There may be more obstacles than just state legislation.

We called multiple water authorities in the Dallas area and they say while they do have water needs, looking to the panhandle as a solution is at the bottom of the list.
