State Soon to Target Uninsured Drivers

A law aimed at cracking down on the number of uninsured drivers is finally going into effect...three years after being passed.

One in five drivers in Texas does not have auto insurance. The program created to cut that number down has had to work out a few kinks.

Texas legislators passed the bill in 2005 creating a database that would immediately confirm whether a driver has the minimum coverage required by state law.

Driver information would be provided by insurers.

The program will start next month in Austin on a pilot basis. After errors are worked out there, it will spread to other cities, including Amarillo.

Uninsured drivers cost Texans $1 billion every year in coverage.
