What Is Cyanide?

Cyanide is usually joined with other chemicals and used in photographic developing, making plastics and in mining.

In the hydrogen form, it is a colorless gas with a faint, bitter, almond-like odor. Sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide are both white solids with a bitter, almond-like odor.

If you are exposed to high levels of the poison it harms the brain and heart, and may cause coma and death.

You can be exposed to cyanide by breathing air, drinking water, touching soil or eating foods that contain the chemical.
