High Speed Pursuit Throughout the Panhandle

A suspected felon is behind bars tonight after the Department of Public Safety says he led troopers on a high speed pursuit through three panhandle counties today.

It started just outside Conway on I-40 and continued into Amarillo before heading south and ending just north of Canyon.

The DPS says speeds were constantly between 80 and 110 miles per hour.

During the pursuit the suspect, identified as 25 year old Arthur D. Smith, reportedly avoided spike strips on two different occasions leading troopers to take drastic measures.

"Prior to where he crossed the median one of our troopers fired one shot with a shotgun disabled his right rear tire which took a while to deflate and did about the location it came to a stop," said DPS Trooper Ben Urbancyzk.

Troopers tell us they believe the car was stolen in Kansas.

Smith has three felony warrants in his home state of North Dakota and now faces four charges in Randall County.
