Texas Mental Hospital Employees Fired For Alleged Abuse

More than 70 employees at Texas' ten state mental hospitals have been fired after allegations of physical abuse.  Dozens more have been disciplined since 2005.

The Dallas Morning News reports violence against patients include choking, headlocks and threats.

Records show hundreds of others were fired for reasons like overmedicating patients and sleeping on the job.

The Department of State Health Services says abuse and neglect are not problems.  In fact, officials say the number of verified cases is dropping.  An agency spokesman says most patient deaths since 2005 were from natural causes...he says none have been because of abuse.
