Panhandle Residents Spend Rebate Checks on Electronics

Many Americans added some extra zeros to their checking account today - courtesy of government rebate checks designed to stimulate the economy.

While many people here in the Panhandle are divided on what to spend their rebate money on, electronics seem to be the hot ticket item, specifically high definition televisions. Amarillo's Circuit City Store Director Joe Larra says he's not shocked at it's popularity. "Things are gearing towards a family experience, home experience, prices of gas, things like that, people want to have entertainment in their home, so people are looking to make that family experience better with a brand new hd tv experience."

Amarillo resident Errol Buller and his wife are forgoing that HD experience, and opting to spend their money on something else instead. Buller says he's buying a projector, something he's wanted for a long time and is now purchsing because he expects that rebate check in the mail very soon.

If you e-filed your taxes, you should be receiving your rebate check via direct deposit within the next two weeks, depending on your social security number. If you did not e-file your taxes, you can expect your rebate check to come in the mail. The first round of those checks will be mailed out on May 9, and again depending on your social security number, you could get your money anywhere between the second week in May and July.

    One person is dead and another is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning. Around 1:50 a.m., Amarillo Police officers were called to the 2600 block of East Amarillo Blvd. on a motor vehicle striking two pedestrians and then fleeing the scene. Lucila Trevino, 58 from Friona, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jose Grado, 43 from Friona, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police have no description of the suspect veh...
