Renters' Rights

We are told the city's building safety department constantly receives complaints on living conditions in areas around town.

What's more, the complaints are often legitimate.

So before signing a lease, one city official says read the document word for word to avoid any surprises should an unpleasant situation arise.

Gwen Gonzales encourages tenants to know their rights under Texas law. She says it is imperative tenants know what is required of both them and the management.

But if a problem arises anyway, Gonzales says to leave a paper trail...document everything, starting with the very first complaint letter sent to the office.

And if the problem is not solved, call the city to request an inspection.
