Hereford Police Department Press Release

Friday, March 28, 2008

At 8:02AM, the Hereford Police Department received a 911 call from 402 W 4th Street pertaining to a young child not breathing. Hereford Police and Hereford EMS Ambulance responded. A short time later a second EMS Ambulance was requested.

Officers found Daniel Felipe Perez, age 32, inside the residence and bleeding from both wrists. A small 17-month-old child, Kira Tijerina, was found lying inside her baby bed and not breathing. An autopsy was ordered by acting Justice of the Peace: Darla hale and conducted in Lubbock later this afternoon.

Perez was transported by EMS to Hereford Regional Medical Hospital and treated for his self-inflicted lacerations. Perez is the live-in boyfriend of the mother of the victim who was at work during the time of the incident. With statements given, it is determined the baby died at or around 10:00PM, Thursday night by blunt force trauma to the head.

Hereford Police questioned Perez and a statement was taken into his involvement of the baby's death. Since this homicide involved a victim younger than six years of age, Perez was arrested and charged with Capital Murder.

Hereford's last homicide occurred in February, 2001. Seven (7) years ago.
