A 32-year-old man is in Deaf Smith County Jail facing capital murder charges tonight.

He allegedly caused his live-in girlfriend's baby to die by blunt force trauma to the head.

Police say Daniel Felipe Perez was arrested this morning after a bizarre scene unfolded at his apartment.

Officials tell us Perez forcefully pulled a shirt over 17-month-old Kira Tijerina's head causing her to fall from the top of a dresser.

He then placed her back in her crib and told the mother she had gone to sleep for the night.

Police responded to a 911 call at eight this morning when the baby's mother called and reportedly told emergency services that her baby was cold and not breathing.

"She called the ambulance and he knew she had called the ambulance and called us and that's when he tried to kill himself," said Hereford Police Chief David Wagner.

Police officials said they had to call a second ambulance to the scene because of Perez's self inflicted wounds.

He was treated at a local hospital and then taken to the police station where he allegedly told police he was responsible for the baby's death.

"It's been over 7 years... 7 years and a month since we've had a homicide in the city limits of Hereford," Chief Wagner said.
