New Mexico launching campaign to establish paternity

SANTA FE (AP)  The state wants unwed fathers to establish ties with their children.

The child support enforcement director for the Human Services Department, Charissa Saavedra, sees establishing paternity is good for both father and child. She says a father gets legal notification if his child is put up for adoption.

And Saavedra says fathers who establish paternity are more apt to pay child support. She says knowing who the father is also gives doctors more information about a child's family medical history.

And it can make the child eligible for Social Security benefits if something happens to the father.
