Do Plastic Bottles Harm Babies?

Your child's baby bottle could pose a danger to his or her health because of a chemical found in plastic. That, according to recent research by a consumer coalition of several health and environmental groups.

But others say there is nothing to worry about....yet.

Bisphenol-A, or BPA is a synthetic estrogen developed in the 1960s and it apparently can cause behavioral disorders and cancer.

But one local pediatrician we spoke with says she takes her cues from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has not taken a position on the issue. So, she says she tells parents it is safe to use those plastic bottles, but proceed with caution.

Dr. Meganne Walsh says "I am not too concerned but i'm always supporting new research so we should try and do that."

Experts say BPA is released when the plastic is heated up or scratched. So if parents are worried, walsh says to keep bottles out of the microwave and dishwasher, and do not re-use bottles that are not meant to be re-used.
