Cannon F-16 Malfunction

An F-16 Fighting Falcon from Cannon Air Force Base was forced to abandon it's external fuel tanks after takeoff.

A spokesman for the base says the pilot abandoned the tanks after the $35 Million jet experienced serious system malfunction.

The pilot managed to maintain control of the aircraft and safely land back at the base.

The tanks were destroyed when they landed in an open field on private property about two miles northwest of the base.

Cannon is now investigating what caused the jet's malfunction.
