TEA Offers Student Identity Protection

You can make sure your child's personal information is protected.

Parents can choose not to disclose their social security number when enrolling them in school.  Instead the Texas Education Agency will issue a state identification card.

"If the parent does not want to use the students the district will assign a state approved alternative student identification number and that number will be reported to the state."  TEA Spokesperson De Etta Culbertson said.
The agency says the social security number or student ID number is used in the Public Education Information Management System or PEIMS to track all student data to the state.

Culbertson says sometimes that information is given to contracted state vendors but student confidentiality is their main priority. She says once the information has been reported it is destroyed after each use.
