30 local soldiers deployed to Iraq this morning on a 12 to 15 month mission.

26 servicemen and 4 servicewomen of the Amarillo Army Reserve bid farewell to family and friends this morning at the Rick Husband International Airport as they prepare for 3 missions in iraq. The first being the laundry advanced drying system. An assignment that Private First Class Katie Skarke says she'll be happy to have.

"Hopefully I'll just stay on the base and wash clothes."

The soldiers will also provide  force protection.

"Which means protecting our base. Checking people in and out, doing security checks on people and houses." says Specialist Eric Kirby

Perhaps the most dangerous is convoy security which is their main mission.
"We drive down the roads, clear the roads, check for roadside bombs and things like that."

For family members left behind, support services are available.

"I stay in contact with the families while the soldiers are gone. I am the liaison between the army reserve center and the soldiers family." says Army Reserve Center volunteer, Kim McMahon.

So if you need help with medical services, child care and other household issues the center is there to help. The soldiers and their families admit they are scared, and sad about being apart, but are willing to make the sacrifice in order to protect the freedoms of our country.
