Area Farmers Pull for Safety Net

Thousands of area farmers are calling for a quick green light to a federal safety net over the next five years.

The Texas Wheat Producers Association is urging U.S. legislators to swiftly iron out differences in the farm bill. That way Texas panhandle producers would know what to count on for next year.

The bill contains provisions to pay farmers relief money in case crop prices drop below a certain level.

President Bush has threatened to veto the legislation as it stands, calling it an unwise use of taxpayer dollars.
