Fatal Shooting on East 10th and Garfield

A man is found dead in an alley early this morning on East 10th and Garfield in Amarillo.

The victim is 31-year-old Erik Mendoza of Amarillo.

Police say they were called out at 7:20 this morning on a shots fired report at East 10th and Garfield.   When they arrived, there was no victim in sight.

Lieutenant Gary Trupe says when police arrived they did see a man wandering around the alley.  The man then ran from police and hid in a dumpster.  When officers found him, they also found a loaded gun.

And at the same time, they were told of a shooting victim who had been pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The pieces then started to come together.  Trupe says witnesses said the man police found in a dumpster was who shot Mendoza.

That man has been taken to the Potter County Detention Center and is charged with murder.

Trupe also says there apparently was a party late Sunday night at the house near where Mendoza was shot.

Police say they are trying to figure out if an argument erupted or what triggered the shooting.
