Student Injured in School Bus Accident

An Amarillo Independent School District bus crashed on an overpass Wednesday morning, sending one student to the hospital.

Amarillo police say the 12 year old suffered minor injuries after the driver hit the side of the overpass while making a u-turn. Also on the bus, the driver and a bus monitor suffered minor injuries. Police have not cited the driver, but continue to investigate the crash.

Durham School Service, who operates the buses for Amarillo ISD, tell us they are investigating the incident as well. Their policy requires that the driver of the bus be pulled off the route pending the investigation.

Through witness statements they will determine whether the accident was preventable. If a driver has three preventable accidents in a two year period, they lose their job. If it's determined to be unpreventable, the driver can return to work, often with training.
