Retail Sales Confirm Bleak Holiday Outlook

The shopping season got off to a busy start on "black Friday" promotions, but then shoppers largely pulled back. 

Monthly sales results confirm a lackluster holiday season. 

But warehouse club operator Costco and discount giant Wal-Mart are among the winners. 

Mall-based apparel stores including Limited brands and Wet Seal had less-than-hoped-for results. 

Target warns it may not hit quarterly earnings projections if sales fail to improve after falling off in the final week of November.
