Perry becomes head of Republican Governors Association

DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) - Texas Governor Rick Perry says he'll champion economic development as he campaigns for fellow GOP governors.

Perry today has been elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association during their meeting in southern California.

Perry, during a roundtable discussion, says you've got to be able to answer to the taxpayers of your state.

Perry has played up job creation and economic development as the leader of Texas.

He's handed out millions of dollars in state government grants to companies that relocate or expand in the state.

Perry will be charged with fundraising and campaigning around the country during his 1-year term as chairman.

There are 22 sitting Republican governors. Eleven governorships are up for election in 2008, with five GOP incumbents seeking another term.
