Sister of Armed Man Speaks Out After Shooting

A family member is speaking out about a man involved in an area police station shooting.
The sister of 39-year-old Jeff Whitten tells us he's diagnosed with schizophrenia.

"Jeff told me that he walked into the police department with a gun and he was gonna shoot one of the officers,"says Donna Fanning. "And I don't know why but he has a lot of mental problems."

The Department of Public Safety tells us Whitten walked into the Childress police office Sunday night with a shotgun.  An officer shot him in the arm when he refused to put it down. "It's puzzling why he did it because we don't know," says DPS Trooper Daniel Hawthorne.

Fanning insists the entire incident would not have happened if her brother had been taking his medication. No officers were hurt in the shooting and the DPS says charges could be filed against Whitten as soon as Tuesday.
