City Speaks on MRSA

Amid concerns about the MRSA strain of staph, the City of Amarillo attempted to calm fears and answer questions about the infection.

The city says it first noticed a problem with the drug-resistant strain in our area five years ago.

It then asked hospitals to report suspected MRSA cases on a voluntary basis.

Dr. Rush Pierce of the city's Health Department says based on the information from hospitals, MRSA cases have increased by 100 every year since 2003.

Both doctors and city health officials say MRSA is treatable and curable. And the best way to protect against it is thorough hand washing.
