Rural Fire Near Portales Contained

Firefighters continue to clean-up smoldering areas after a grass fire near Portales, but they have re-opened US Highway 70.

We spoke with the Portales Fire Department Thursday morning.

They told us while they have the fire fully contained, some areas continue to smolder inside the burn zone.

In total the fire burned about 20,000 acres.

State police closed US Highway 70 between Portales and Clovis Wednesday as strong winds fanned the flames.

The fire burned across about five miles of open farm and ranchland before crews managed to slow it down.

It did not threaten any buildings.
