Texas Budget Leftovers

An extra one-point-five billion dollars of unspent money.

That's what Texas State Comptroller Susan Combs found when she closed the books on the 2007 budget period. The state can not spend most of that extra money until lawmakers meet again.

The next regular legislative session is in 2009. The final balance on the fiscal year, that ended August 31st, came in at 8.5 billion dollars.

That's up from the seven billion dollars expected earlier this year. Combs says the increase comes from more revenue, state economic growth and tight legislative spending.
