To protect you from becoming the victim of identity theft, local financial institutions are teaming up.

About 20 financial institutions in and around Amarillo met for the first time recently to talk about how they can protect their customers.

Beth Stewart from Amarillo National Bank says,"just talking to each other, we have everyone's email addresses so if we see trends we can talk to everyone."

The idea came about after thousands of debit card numbers were stolen when customers used them at Zookini's restaurant in Amarillo.

The institutions are also working with local police and the FBI to combat these kinds of schemes.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent using the stolen debit and credit card numbers used at Zookini's.

Banks all over the Panhandle have had to issue thousands of new cards.

Amarillo National Bank has been looking as far back as January and finding stolen numbers.

An investigation into the Zookini's scam is going on now.
